Page 1/2 Gold Coast Airport Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K - 2013/2014

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon takes place on the east coast of Australia in the state of Queensland every year on the first Sunday in July. In 2012 the date was Sunday 1 July. The Gold Coast Marathon 2013 will take place on 6-7 July 2013.

The race has existed since 1979, and has over the years grown to comprise 23,000 participants from 30 countries running and walking in the marathon, half marathon, 10km run, 5km challenge and two Junior Dashes over 2.25km and 4km.

The first Gold Coast Marathon in 1979 was a result of a community project designed to make the residents become fitter. The goal was to make a group of un-fit non-runners able to complete a marathon. When the participants in the project seemed to be able to reach the goal, they were in need of a marathon to test their efforts, and the inaugural Gold Coast Marathon was held with only 124 entrants. Organisers expect more than 28,000 participants in the 2013 edition.

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon starts and finishes at Broadwater Events Parklands in Southport, and the course winds up and down the Gold Coast with the Pacific Ocean and Broadwater as sparkling backdrops. Marathoners will get a good view of one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world and pass famous spots along the way, including the adventure tourist’s heaven, Surfers Paradise. If you can keep your warm, worn-out body from jumping into the alluring ocean, this is a great way to explore one of Australia’s favourite tourist destinations.

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon course is fast and flat, consisting of two laps going north and south from the start line. This means that runners pass the spectator-crowded start/finish area about halfway through the course, getting an extra encouragement boost from the generous cheering.

Runners who need some heavy support to keep their feet going won’t be disappointed as awards are given to the most imaginative and passionate spectator groups along the course.
