Page 1/2 Rock ’n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon and Half Marathon 2010

The Las Vegas Marathon is run in the world’s gambling capital every year in December. Las Vegas Marathon 2010 takes place on Sunday, December 5, 2010.
The marathon in Las Vegas is one of the oldest in the United States and has existed since 1967. Nevertheless the Las Vegas Marathon 2009 got to call itself ‘inaugural’ – because the race was the newest member of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. This musical running series began in San Diego in 1998, and now consists of marathons in 11 American cities, including New Orleans, Chicago, Seattle and – for the first time in December 2009 – Las Vegas.
The changes of the Las Vegas Marathon did not only include a name change, but involved a new and improved course in addition to all the mandatory features of a Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. As the organizers put it, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon is not only a really long run, but a festive fusion of a sports event and a whole festival of rock concerts. This means live music every mile, screaming spectators incarnating that special Las Vegas feeling and real high school cheerleaders along the course. All these novelties and improvements led the organizers to expect 20,000 runners in 2009, more than double the number of finishers from 2008. And their expectations were more that met – over 23,000 runnners finished either the full or the half marathon.
In addition to a cool new name, an explosion in the number of entertainment sites and a membership of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon family, the 2009 Las Vegas Marathon boasted of a brand new course. And yes, it shows off the crazy city’s most well-known site: the Strip. For the first time in the history of the race all lanes of Las Vegas Boulevard were car-free area in both directions for the entire event on December 6. So there was nothing but cheering onlookers and vigorous music bands to separate the runners from the hotels, casinos and surrealism of the Strip. An abundance of world famous landmarks made this marathon a true Las Vegas experience. The huge pyramid-shaped Luxor, the romantic Venetian and the opulent fountain-adorned Bellagio are just a few of the sites that competing for the runners’ attention along the Strip. Half marathoners finished a 21.0975 km/13.1 mile loop exclusively on the Strip, while full marathoners after a run up and down the famous boulevard will headed west for a loop on Twain Avenue, Rainbow Boulevard and Hacienda Avenue. Both half and full marathon started and finished in front of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino – one of the city’s most classy resorts with a tropical theme and a cool shark reef.
